Town Centre Fly-tipping Forces Action
(June 15, 2020)Very public town centre unsightly and messy fly-tipping caused by bags and bags of rubbish being left on a Warminster street pavement has forced Wiltshire Council to add a commercial-sized bin.
Fly-tipping is usually experienced at remote locations like Smallbrook Nature Reserve car park but in George Street special circumstances make it difficult to cope with handling local household rubbish..
Several properties on this road have no outside space, and as such no place to store their own waste, so their household waste bags have been collected from this location on George Street.
However, the presence of the waste bags has led to an increase in fly-tipping in this area, so to prevent this, the council has installed the new large bin and anti-fly-tipping signage,
“There is something known to the police as ‘broken window syndrome’ where if certain elements of society see a broken window they feel it is ok to break another one,” said Paul Macdonald who before lockdown enjoyed having a regular breakfast at the nearby Farmers Hotel.
"This long-standing problem is driven by the same mentality. A big thumbs-up for this sensible approach which will take away this eyesore that did nothing to promote the area.”
A local shopkeeper is pleased that action has finally been taken to deal with ever increasing nuisance.
“Quite often the bags were torn apart leaving a disgusting mess piled up there.” said Steve Ware who owns Steve’s Tackle angling shop. “It could have been dogs or foxes at night.”
“It was not a good thing to see time after time. It has got to be a benefit for our street.”
There will be increased enforcement of fly-tipping in the area, including using CCTV evidence where required.
"The issue of persistent fly-tipping in this area has been a problem for local residents for some time, so we have installed this large bin, signage and other anti-fly-tipping measures to help put a stop to it” said Waste Wiltshire Councillor Bridget Wayman
"We hope this will solve the problem, but if not, we will use CCTV evidence to prosecute any fly-tippers, as we have at other hotspots around the county. Fly-tippers can expect a Fixed Penalty Notice of £400 if they are caught dumping waste at this site."
