Council Commits to being Greener

(July 20, 2020)

Warminster Town Council took a step forward tonight after declaring a Climate Change emergency at their meeting in January but over six months later stopped short of a policy issuing another declaration instead.

The town has seen a big upsurge by local residents about looking after the environment which has put it firmly of the council agenda.

A working group met in February and has two councillors who were joined using video links by members of Sustainable Warminster in June and July.

“We would not have a policy but a declaration,” said Cllr. Steve Jefferies in a statement proposing this move.

“This will lead to the strategy.”

After the preamble the latest declaration gives their municipal promise to improve sustainability.

‘We are committed to enhancing the sustainability of our practices to safeguard Warminster and the surrounding area’s natural and built environments,’ the declaration states.

‘We will commit to protecting the environment through demonstrable and continuous improvement of our environmental performance, and full compliance with all relevant legal requirements.

‘We will promote climate governance throughout the organisation and services, while encouraging and monitoring responsible environmental performance by our staff, suppliers, volunteer groups and contractors.’

They have drawn up a list of seven ways they hope to match the commitment including trying to achieve carbon neutrality by 2030, switching to renewable energy, their use of vehicles, backing tree planting, biodiversity and green spaces.

Town councillors hope to lead by example for their community to follow.
