Saving Warminster Can Be A Role Model
(April 13, 2021)The Conservative party in Warminster nearly saw off all opposition until at the last moment a few independent minded very green residents decided to throw their very indivdual hats into the ring.
Battling with the Tories with another Independent candidate Stacie Allensby is a resident of the west ward Malcolm Mellersh. Their actions saved the local peole from a no-contest and offers a radical choice.
"I have political views but I am not really interested in following a particular dogma," explained Pound Street resident Malcolm.
"I am standing as an Independent Councillor in order to provide service to the community from an understanding of the fundamental reasons why people want to live in this town and how to make it better for all of us.
"I am a recently retired building services design consultant.
"I have been employed for the past odd 45 years designing mechanical/electrical systems within buildings that provide heating, cooling, ventilation, lighting, power, communications, fire safety, security, controls and other specialist systems like medical gas supplies, compressed air, vacuum and steam in hospitals and large factories."
From this background he has developed a detailed understanding of energy conservation and all the issues around global warming.
"These days I am pursuing all the different interests previously precluded by work. I am building a model railway at 00 gauge, as anexample.
"I’m studying Astrophysics, simply out of curiosity. I also have electronics projects on the go.
"My lifetime pre-occupation is music and I picked up the guitar wen I was 10. These days I play jazz and blues, when I can."
The venue is Frome.
"Warminster has a collection of current issues, you know what they are, but I could mention the scaffolding that remains on the High Street, for example, or perhaps the lack of medical infrastructure, since the closure of Smallbrook surgery," argues Malcolm
"We need open consultation to decide on consensus solutions. The dingy old council chamber type meetings that you need a special language to understand and which you cannot attend anyway because you’re busy with family, don’t cut it," adding his radical idea.
"I would like to see frequent use of the internet to promote discussion and use of the existing polling stations to cement opinion.
"Councillors should merely implement, they do not decide what’s good for you without your agreement or approval.
"They need a clear mandate from the residents of the town before they act.
Malcolm wants to use his vast professional experience to play a special role at the town council.
"Then, of course, there’s global warming to think about, seriously. We will need to find a strategy that moves in the right direction but without trying to save the planet," says Malcolm hoping that Warminster can become a role model
"I’d settle for saving Warminster. We don’t need political point gathering and lip service. It achieves nothing!"
