Golden Opportunity Not To Be Missed

(May 04, 2021)

Voters will have a golden opportunity at Thursday's council elections to show that they demand better treatment for Warminster.

More thought, more initiative, more enterprise, vim and yes, backbone is required.

Sadly these five elements have been missing from the current set of Wiiltshire Councillors representing the community who seem content to sit back and achieve very little for the town.

"Their performance can best be described as lacklustre," said former councillor Steve Dancey, who rocked the county's Tories when he defeated them here, in Warminster west, in 1989.

"They have had eight years, some say twelve, to sort this problem out and they have failed.

"Can you imagine such a state of affairs to be allowed to continue in Bradford-on Avon, Malmesbury or Salisbury?

"Of course not. We deserve better."

Better advocates for the town

"If they can't even find the cure for the scaffolding how of earth can you expect them to find resolutions to the town's many other more intractable problems," said Steve.

"I have no doubt that John in Broadway, Stacie in west and Paul in the east ward will be far better advocates for the town and be listened with greater respect than eisting members.

"After all they won the right to speak through the will of the people actively encouraging them instead of being in by the town's legion of Conservative voters."

East ward candidate Paul Macdonald, who has been working around the clock to secure victory, and delivered 2,000 of the 2500 leaflets for his area, says this year could provide a historic breakthrough as he has detected significant unhappiness with the local Conservative political team.

"I know speaking to ordinary day to day people like me that they sense this is a once in a generation chance to do something to change a lot of negativity into positivity," said Paul.

"Only tonight a resident said that something in my leaflet 'resonated' with him.

"Steve is right. The last time locals were as enthusiastic and willing to help us in a local election here was in 1991.

"All six district council seats were taken from the Tories and nine of the 12 town council positions.

"Can we get four Independents in? I hope so. Sometimes history repeats itself and history would really be made if three Independents represent us at county hall!"
