Local Candidate Reveals Top Issues That Need Answers
(May 05, 2021)The local council elections have seen almost no public appearances by candidates but one hopeful standing in Warminster East has been on the streets every hour he can spare for a week.
"It was important to me that I delivered as many of my leaflets myself," said Paul Macdonald.
"With covid restrictions in place I did not feel comfortable with door knocking so doing this I met so many people for a short chat. I did not canvass them. I just listened."
Paul kept notes of those conversations which he was pleased were not curtailed by bad whether and even suffered sunburn!
These are the top issues raised:
'We do not know what is going on behind these doors. Too often we find out too late, and then town councillors say it is too late to do anything about it.
We need something done!' East End Avenue Resident.
'For twelve years we have put up with this. Why?
'It is a disgrace. How much longer do we have to wait for a county councillor to appear sort this out?
'It is dangerous to those that have to walk under it as it is so slippery using any sort of walking aid when wet.' East Street resident.
Others told of their disgust at the lack of action, the shrugging of councillors shoulders, and poor excuses.
'Why does the town council want to buy the police station?' Copheap Rise resident'
'Have councillors ever been in the Library?' Barley Close resident.
'Will the road being built from the Portway past Avenue School be part of this. Nobody knows.' The Ridgeway resident.
'The state of our roads are my bugbear. I travel to work in Warminster and the potholes are everywhere I go.' Devizes resident.
'I like to use my bike to travel to work using the safe cycle lane and the best way is along Imber Road. Scary now!' Boreham resident.
'I complained about workers turning up with a bucket of tarmac and stamping it down with their feet to fill a pothole and got no response.'
'It was done two months ago. Proper job needed.' said someone hearing the chat.
'The town council are throwing ten grands of our money around like confetti. I remember when a lot less than that was spent keeping our football club going.' Boreham Field resident Paul said.
"We have seen the local response to the government covid lockdown which I responded to individually, then grow into something special," said Paul.
"Our own action one by one helping our friends saw the Warminster Action Group emerge and do a brilliant job.
"I would like to see that recognised by both the town council and county hall. There is a way. Proper public participation."
The polling stations open at 7am. They close at 10pm. You can help by taking you polling card but if you cannot find it you give your name and address.
They would like you to take your own pen or pencil.
