Slow Down! SID is watching you

(June 28, 2021)

Warminster town council is being asked to target speeding motorists by purchasing new speed indicator devices after being without them for several years.

The portable electronic signs that warn drivers travelling over the speed limit to slow down it is hoped will be used to support other actions that being used..

“Warminster town council development committee welcomes the re-introduction of Community Speed Watch training,” said Cllr. Paul Macdonald proposing the move at the committee meeting this evening.

“Councillors recognise that the issue was once again raised at the annual parish meeting.

“The committee notes that the town council may also use Speed Indication Devices at its discretion to support the work of the community speed watch teams and ‘champion’.”

The councillor, who represents the largest ward in the town, asked for the two to be purchased ‘once the currently available traffic counts have been looked at and liaise with Wiltshire Police and Wiltshire Council about their use’.

“I have great experience when it comes down to the use of devices that monitor the speed from the old mobile radar equipment, through VASCA, to hand held equipment,” said former policeman Cllr. John Syme

The town council had used ‘hand-me-down’ speed indicators from Wiltshire Council but they had become unserviceable.

“I propose that the committee appoints councillor John Syme to be the CSW champion,” said Cllr. Macdonald.

Councillors voted unanimously in favour of the two proposals.

“I am pleased that we have set the wheels in motion as part of the answer to residents who have complained to myself and John so many times,” said Cllr. Macdonald after the meeting.
