Yet another shop to close in town centre

(January 02, 2009)
IT WAS on the cards but another outlet is departing Warminster as the recession continues to hit local shoppers and workers. It is another blow for the Three Horsesehoes Mall which has seen CM2 and Fairprice emptied and closed down, writes Paul Macdonald

Cardfair is the latest to put up its closing down signs after administrators for the parent company were appointed last year.

Shoppers snapping up key fobs, calendars and cuddly toys saving 75 pence in the pound were told by staff today (Friday) that the store was closing on Saturday week.

"It just goes on and on," said one sympathetic woman shopper. "Woolies, the Card Market and now you."

Cardfair rapidly grew from its original shop in Hitchin opened in 1992 to its peak numbering 282 stores in all four countries of the UK.

The biggest expansion came in 2003 when Cardfair bought the Card Warehouse chain.

Then the economic crisis claimed them as another victim in October last year putting the Warminster jobs at risk as the Joint Administrators from Kroll Ltd. were appointed.

Like Woolworths in the High Street the shop was kept open for Christmas but leaves little to cheer in 2009
