Portway to get CCTV cover near war memorial

(January 27, 2009)
IT has for a long time been the long arm of the law that criminals and miscreants have had to face up to but now its is also the long lens of the authorities, writes Paul Macdonald.

Those charged with helping the police catch or identify troublemakers and law breakers using closed circuit television cameras (CCTV) have been given the go-ahead for another viewpoint along Portway in Warminster.

The cameras and their operators have recently been given fulsome praise by local police inspector David Minty in helping to tackle a spate of town centre break-ins (hot topics 19 Jan).

The television screens in the control centre above the town council offices in North Row which already have views of the town park and all the main streets in the town centre will now carry images of Portway towards the railway bridge and beyond.

It will help to maintain a watchful eye on the Woodmead residential home for the elderly the entrance to Portway Lane.

This new set of lens on a pole close to the War Memorial will also provide views of the exit from The Avenue cutting off another bolt hole from those up to no good.
