Getting all steamed up for charity
(January 31, 2009)THE Warminster & District Model Railway Group are busy planning their layouts and displays for an exhibition in the town for the 34th year running.
Each year the small charge that they make to visitors to see the fruits of their hobby is put towards supporting good causes. This year the profits will be given to two children's and two animal charities.
The Great Ormond Street hospital and locally Imperial Charity along with The Mayhew Trust and the Blue Cross Animal Home will benefit.
Refreshments, which the organisers claim are the 'best anywhere', will be available as well stalls that will bring back memories of the excitement of opening birthday presents to find the latest Hornby train set.
The doors at the Assembly Hall in Warminster will open at 10am on Saturday 21 February with adults being asked for £4, under-14s and pensioners £2.
Nationally train aficionados are looking forward to the chance to travel on a service using the first steam train to be built in nearly half a century.
The new £3m 'Tornado' will be setting off from York on a return excursion to Newcastle with hundreds of fare paying customers thanks to the work of volunteers at the National Railway Museum in Leeds today (Saturday).
Locally, charities will be hoping that the efforts of model railway enthusiasts will attract hundreds to their first major event of the year.
