All gas and gapers - but where's the workmen?
(May 02, 2009)It was bank holiday Friday afternoon traffic chaos not on the trunk road that runs around Warminster but in the town centre itself.
A temporary road closure in one direction along East Street brought traffic to a virtual standstill and will probably be the death knell to calls for a permanent one-way system.
Motorists queued all along Fairfield Road from the junction with Imber Road as did drivers in Station Road.
Those behind them in the Market Place, High Street, The Close and George Street had plenty of time to do some window shopping and gape at the latest bargains.
In one case it allowed so much time that after a lengthy conversation with another motorist going in the opposite direction an exchange of business cards took place.
The cause of the four days of the feeling of 'groundhog day' or 'here we don't go again '- a single hole in the road excavated to reveal a gas main - had very little else to show for it.
In a repeat of the town centre improvement scheme work appears to be going on very slowly.
"I hope we are not going to have a one-way system," said one East Street businesswoman.
There is little by way of official information about the closure but the experience is showing that at least an extra 20 minutes must be allowed to use either the town centre or the Copheap rat run. BE WARNED
