MARKET PLACE TO COME ALIVE FOR CHRISTMAS
(November 21, 2009)WARMINSTER town centre is expected to come alive at the weekend in a way not seen for many years.
This year's Christmas Market and lights switch-on has reverted to the more sensible option of Saturday when it will be of greatest help to local traders and be more of an event.
For children there will be Father Christmas in his grotto, snow machines and Children's rides at Jennings' Fair.
Local community radio station WCR will organise a music stage all day and performances by school choirs will take place through the day.
Schools expected to take part include Minster, Crockerton, Princecroft and New Close.
There will also be jazz, brass and folk music and local singers.
The road will be closed between Station Road and Weymouth Street between 7am and 7pm.
''I'm particularly pleased that WCR is taking a leading role in the festivities this year as their music output is likely to be more in tune with the true spirit of Christmas,'' said Steve Dancey, of VisionforWarminster.
''In previous years a far too loud output and poor choice of music from the 3TR commercial radio station completely spoiled everything and organisers should always ask themselves whether people really want to listen to Slade or similar trash music from the 1970s on these occasions. I certainly don't.
''Some of my earliest and most vivid memories as a child here were of enjoying the fairground rides in the Market Place in the early 1960s and hopefully this event will provide something equally memorable for today's generation of children.''
Visionforwarminster will be in the area during the day to capture the event as part of our promotion of Warminster activities.
