Town will find out date of meeting 'early next week'

(March 12, 2010)
THE town will find out 'early next week' when the special parish meeting will take place to call for the parish poll on the future of the Assembly Rooms.
Last week's Warminster Journal, after receiving an erroneous press release issue by WC cabinet member Keith Humphreys, had stated that such meetings have to be staged at the annual parish meeting.
''This was complete nonsense, of course, but never mind - they have got it right now,'' said Steve Dancey, who has more than 25 years' experience of local government affairs across three counties.
''We now have a communication from the town council which tells us that the date of the meeting will be published early next week.
''Rest assured we will be keen to promote a good turn-out at this meeting so that town councillors can be made aware of the strength of public disquiet about this.
''If after they have lost the poll they decide to press on it would simply show a complete contempt for democracy.'
VisionforWarminster has been accused of seeking the poll for political reasons - but we are non-party political and would seek to remove party political labels from town council affairs.
''Our existing town council has 11 Conservatives out of 12 members which is crazy. Perhaps if the Tories didn't treat Warminster as their political back-yard the town council wouldn't have agreed to take on the loss making Assembly Rooms from the Conservative run West Wilts District Council as a favour.
''The chickens are coming home to roost now but they want use to pay for the coop.''
