French group to weigh up town's tubby tots

(July 23, 2010)
WARMINSTER'S very smallest inhabitants are to be the subject of a pilot study led by the Danone - Nutricia group.
Cllr Keith Humphries, whose portfolio in the Wiltshire Cabinet covers public well-being, announced this latest initiative at the last town council meeting.
The study is to look at children aged between 0 and 3 in Warminster and will need to address the issue of obesity in children.
''This is a major issue in Warminster as our youngsters are the fattest in the county according to the Joint Strategic Needs Assessment drawn up by NHS Wiltshire,'' said Steve Dancey, who was one of the first to see the important document last March.

Warminster has almost a quarter of its children judged as obese compared to just 12 per cent in places like Pewsey.
''These tables make interesting reading and NHS Wiltshire should be commended for producing them and bringing them to the attention of policymakers,'' said Steve Dancey.
''The worrying obesity figures suggest that extra effort should be make to encourage more physical activity on the part of children.
''We have long argued for a play strategy specifically designed for Warminster so hopefully those who are in a position of power will take heed and come up with some imaginative proposals to address this matter.''
