SPENDING REVIEW - we told you what was in it 10 months ago!!
(October 21, 2010)YESTERDAY'S comprehensive spending review and its accompanying cuts in
spending would not have come as too much of a surprise to
Visionforwarminster readers as we revealed last December what the scale
of the cuts would be. Click here to see what we said last year.
Back then we had been given access to some material which suggested a year on year cut of five per cent to budgets - not far from what actually happened.
However our local government has been hit much harder with 7.1 per cent year on year reductions - mainly because some other departments have been protected from cuts.
Wiltshire Council will struggle to cope with the demands that this lack of funding will bring but in some ways it is better placed than others where government revenue support grant provides a higher percentage of a council's income - as in the urban industrial cities of northern England.
''We were accused of scaremongering when we came up with those figures last December but we were proved right yet again,'' said Steve Dancey of VFW.
''Now we have been told that yesterday's cuts are not deep enough and that further action will be needed - with education spending likely to face pressure within the next two years.''

"This first coalition government since the Second World War is
going to be a disaster because we are not going to come out of it with
anything as good as the NHS that was created," added Paul Macdonald.
