A tribute to Mrs Main
(May 24, 2012)NEWS of the death of Mrs Dorothea Joan Main will sadden many people in Warminster.
Mrs Main, originally from British Colombia in Canada, was a hugely respected councillor and educationalist who was committed to improving Wiltshire's education service.
She married Warminster businessman Maurice Main just after the Second World War.
She represented Warminster East on Wiltshire County Council from the time the town was warded in 1973 until 2005 and during that time served as chairman of the education committee and also as a chairman of the council.
Steve Dancey, who represented Warminster West at County Hall in the late 1980s and early 1990s, said Mrs Main was a genuinely respected county councillor and this respect cut across party political lines.
"She was a firm supporter of the principles of the 1944 Butler Education Act to the extent that she rebelled against her party and won Warminster East as an independent in the mid 1980s," he said.
"This explained part of the respect but it went further than this as there was always a genuine interest in people and of course in Warminster. She was also an educated person who could understand complicated points in debate and a definite asset to the town.
"Before she moved into a nursing home I would often see her shopping in the supermarket and she would stop for a chat.
"Sadly missed."
Mrs Main also served on Warminster Town Council from 1973 until 2007 and was chairman of the town council in the Silver Jubilee year of 1977 and subsequently mayor on two occasions.
