Wetherspoons paid just £350,000 for the Bath Arms
(August 17, 2012)REGULAR visitors will recall that we were the first to reveal that J D Wetherspoon had bought the Bath Arms in the Market Place.
Now we can reveal how much they paid - a mere £350,000 - well below the figure the previous owners would have had as the 'book value'.
However we understand that they are planning to spend £1.5 million on the building which could be opening in time for Christmas. The aim is for the business to take some big money, say insiders. The average turnover is around £1.3million a year
Under the proposals we expect to see the toilets moved upstairs and the whole downstairs area devoted to customer space.
The company's most recent work locally was The Bear in Melksham where their efforts have been widely praised.
Steve Dancey said: "The arrival of Wetherspoons will significantly increase footfall in the town centre and should be welcomed by most.
"They have done well by providing what people want at the right price, and cater for families and older people during the day.
"I won't miss the old style Bath Arms - I think I have been inside that pub about three times in half a century. I'm sure I'll visit the new Bath Arms far more frequently."
