Salisbury Royal British Legion Steps Forward
(November 03, 2014)Warminster's annual Remembrance Day parade this Sunday is led by town crier Phil Seddon and the Salisbury city band of the Royal British Legion as the military sound the 'last post' for their marching musicians.
The Sunday afternoon commemoration traditionally attracts a large crowd which gathers in the Portway after watching the march past which sets off from Station Road.
This year the HQ of the Warminster Garrison have admitted that 'unfortunately for 2014 HM Armed Forces is unable to supply a marching band for this parade therefore the band will be provided (by) Salisbury City Band of the Royal British Legion'.
There is other news this year at the centenary of the start of World War One.
There will be two new choirs joining the service which sees the laying of wreaths at the War Memorial.
"The question that has been put to me is if the army cutbacks now mean that they cannot provide a marching band in a town with strong military connections like ours then is it time that our service should be held at 11am in future," said Cllr. Paul Macdonald.
"I was told when I was deputy mayor in the 1990's that the service here was held at 3pm to help the army provide a marching band with the commitment to all the other service that were also going on around Salisbury Plain.
"I have no strong views on this but it now may be the time to ask the public for their view."
