Go behind a tree for a pee?
(March 24, 2016)Residents and visitors to Warminster face months of inconvenience as Wiltshire Council have carried on its relentless slashing of services which this time will close the two remaining public conveniences in the town.
The shock announcement that all toilets would be closed by April unless other groups came forward to run them has not allowed enough time to keep them open.
Warminster Town Council agreed to investigate taking them over and recently voted to take them on.
"It is my conclusion that Wiltshire Council are behaving unreasonably, too hastily and showing a lack of respect to the town council," said Cllr. Paul Macdonald.
"We have made it clear to them that we had no budget set aside for taking them over.
"Then we were hit by the sudden arbitrary announcement of the date.
"We have to get all the i's dotted and t's crossed on the tender document as we have no direct labour force.
"We then have to award the contract and this will take a couple of more months.
"We have now put money into our budget so that we can run them from July 1st which we think is a reasonable offer.
"It is completely unreasonable of them to treat Warminster and their locally elected representatives in this way."
There are two sets of public toilets in the town. One building which includes a specially adapted one for the disabled is in the Central car park. The other is the Lakeside Pleasure Grounds.
"This means that for three months parents with their children in the town park will face the obvious problems," Said Cllr. Paul Macdonald.
"What is Wiltshire Council's advice? Go behind a tree for a pee?
"We must all make a last-minute plea to Wiltshire Councillors to see sense and keep them running for three more months."
