The Warminster Wobble

A WEEKEND of fun on two wheels was enjoyed on 13 and 14 June when the Warminster Wobble moved into top gear.
The weekend cycling extravaganza began with a choice of three rides on Saturday all starting from the park in Weymouth Street.
Ride one was off road and headed for the local wood with a stop for food at the Hunters Moon..
The second ride was for families and led by Bill Fryer - Load luggers Ride of Pride!
“Hitch
up your buggies and tighten the nuts on your child seat for a 9.5 mile
easy going ride” - said the pre-wobble publicity, optimistically.
Ride
three was an altogether more speedy event with a route taking in the
best parts of the Wylye Valley with a stop at The Ginger Piggery at
Boyton for a BBQ. (The pigs bred there are Tamworths, and have been for
many
years)..
Sunday was blessed with even more glorious weather for Wobble Day itself.
Starting
from the park at noon and returning to the park the ride was designed
be easy, no more than a mile, and open for all to join in.
There was a stop on the way round with a drink and a flapjack provided at the Conservative Club.
The
wobble was started by Mayor of Warminster Tony Nicklin and encouraged
along by ‘Prof’ Paul Crump from London, who was on stilts and on a bike
at the same time.
“I got on my bike to get fit,” said the prof (pictured above), who amazed children with his self-raising flower.
Several cycle and sustainable transport pressure groups had stalls and there
was the ubiquitous bouncy castle, plenty of food and a competition for the slowest 50 metre ride around the tennis court. (pictured right).
The
fun continued though the afternoon with a display by the Pink
Starlettes Baton Twirlers - minus one of their star performers who was
nursing a broken foot.
“There was even the chance to buy a new bike - fortunately I had left my cheque book at home,” said Steve Dancey, for VFW.
"Vision
for Warminster has enthusiastically backed any proposals which seek to
improve the facilities and opportunities for cycling and highlighted
any, such as the High Street improvement and the Fairfield Road
drainage problem, which has made life more difficult for those on two
wheels."
Wiltshire
police were also present with Warminster's neighbourhood policing team
beat manager Pc John Pearse in the saddle for the local constabulary. (Pictured left)

The Warminster
Wobble Sunday became a real family outing as visitors to the Lakeside
Pleasure Grounds discovered when the wheelspin of cycle wheels was
complemented by the baton spinning of the Pink Starlettes......
Warminster
Wobble took a literal turn as contestants tried to win the 'Slowest
Bike' competition watched by timekeeper 12-year-old Sharra Oram who
timed Tristan Andrews at an incredible four minutes 57 seconds.........while a 'strange bike' was being ridden nearby backwards by a Warminster Scout Group member.
Walking around
the park there was plenty of much needed refreshment on a really fine
summer day seeing Penny set up her Pantry in the Lakeside centre....
...and in the 'Info Marquee' everyone 'spoke' about real fruit jelly provided by Rachel and Teilo French. (pictured below)
and finally, a different sort of wobble --- ready.
